Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of Google search results, synthesizing an answer from multiple web sources with citation links. Launched broadly in May 2024 (evolved from the Search Generative Experience), AI Overviews are powered by Gemini models and now appear on a substantial share of informational queries across most of Google's markets, with the more conversational AI Mode extending the pattern to full chat-style search sessions.

Why it matters

AI Overviews changed the economics of organic search. When an Overview answers the query on the results page, click-through to traditional listings drops sharply — studies since 2024 consistently measure declines of 30–60% on affected queries, feeding the rise of "zero-click search." For marketers this cuts two ways: raw organic traffic to informational content has fallen, but being cited inside an Overview offers concentrated visibility, and Google reports that clicks from Overview citations show strong engagement. Rank-and-harvest SEO strategies built purely on informational traffic volume have had to be rethought around citation share, brand visibility, and deeper-funnel content.

How it's used

Marketers treat AI Overviews as a surface to be won. Tactics overlap heavily with AEO: direct answers early on the page, question-matched headings, liftable facts and statistics, strong entity signals, and freshness. Notably, pages cited in Overviews are frequently not the #1 organic result — Google's retrieval pulls passages from a broader set, giving well-structured mid-ranking pages a path to visibility they never had. Measurement means tracking which of your priority queries trigger Overviews, whether you're cited, and how Overview presence changes your CTR (Search Console shows the blended effects; dedicated GEO tools track citations directly). Publishers should also note volatility: Overview presence and sourcing shift with Google's frequent updates, so trend tracking beats snapshots.
