AI answer share is the percentage of relevant AI-generated answers in your category that mention, cite, or recommend your brand. If buyers ask assistants 100 category questions and your brand appears in 22 of the responses, your AI answer share is 22%. It is the AI era's equivalent of share of voice.
Why it matters
As more product research happens inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and AI Overviews, the answer itself becomes the first — sometimes only — brand impression. Traditional rank tracking can't see this. A brand can hold the #1 organic position and still be invisible in synthesized answers, or vice versa. AI answer share makes the invisible measurable.
How it's measured
- Build a question set: the 50–200 questions real buyers ask in your category (problems, comparisons, "best X for Y" queries).
- Run them across the major assistants on a schedule — monthly at minimum, weekly for competitive categories.
- Record whether your brand appears, in what position and sentiment, and who else is named.
- Track the trend, not the single snapshot — answers vary between runs, so treat any one result as a sample.
A growing class of GEO tracking tools automates this, but a spreadsheet and a monthly manual run is a legitimate starting point.
